LONDON, England: A marlin perforated a boat with four UK members of a rowing team aboard, which was traveling on a 3,000 mile route through the waters of the Atlantic Ocean.
On January 9, the marlin punctured a hole in the deck, as well as a storage section, according to information from one of the daughters of a member of the rowing team.
The team, The Wrekin Rowers, comprising Stuart and Gary Richards -- brothers -- and Martin Skehan and Stuart Shepherd, are rowing 3,000 miles for charitable causes.
Amy, the daughter of Stuart Shepherd, was told that the trip was continuing after the run-in with the marlin.
No one aboard the boat suffered injuries, though the water that has entered the boat has increased the weight and slowed the pace of their journey.
"They can seal off where it came through, but they haven't been able to repair it," said the daughter, as reported by the BBC.
The quartet set sail on December 12, as they took up the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, in which 36 teams belonging to thirteen nations are participating.
The team members told the daughter that they remain on course and expect to finish the challenge in 38 days, saying they were not seriously impacted by the damage done by the marlin.
There is also a safety boat on the journey, though it has not been deployed.
This marlin is widely spotted in the waters of the Atlantic. The longish pointed flat bill resembling a sword is believed to have been punctured the boat.
"It reminds you of how dangerous it all can be," Amy remarked.
The rowing team remains optimistic that they will win 100,000 pounds, to be donated to the Royal National Institute of Blind People and Severn Hospice.
